The Marble Falls High School boys soccer team crushed Wimberley 7-1 March 26 for a bi-district championship.

Next up is San Antonio Fox Tech (12-9-1, 5-4-1 District 27-4A third place) at 6 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at Mustang Stadium on the Marble Falls High School campus.

The Mustangs (20-2-1, 10-0 District 25-4A champion) took a 5-1 at the half.

The Texans (9-11-1, 6-4 District 26-4A co runners-up) decided to key on Marble Falls senior Garrett Goggans to ensure he didn’t score, which worked.

The trouble was that Goggans displayed the skill of greatness — he trusted his teammates to finish plays by passing them the ball.

Goggans assisted on two goals scored by senior Diego Mata and one by senior Ivan Espino. Mata assisted on goals scored by Kash Bussaraporn and Esteban Dominguez. Sophomore Coda Langley scored thanks to an assist from freshman Jett Marcum. Espino’s other goal was assisted by senior Charlie Brantley.

“That’s the way a championship team plays,” head coach Rick Hoover told his players after they participated in the postgame handshake with Wimberley. “We don’t depend on Garrett.”

Goggans leads the Mustangs with 29 goals scored this season.

“Wimberley had to use up all their resources to stop him,” Hoover said. “They had three guys on him the majority of the time. Everybody on this team is solid. Garrett had 3 positive assists. He really didn’t have too many opportunities to score. He set everybody up. That’s what happens when you put all your resources to stopping one guy.”

Goggans ensured his teammates had one-on-one opportunities for goals, and they made the most of them, Hoover said.

“If you have a hot shooter and they double him, someone is open,” he said.

Hoover noted the Mustangs had the exact opposite experience March 22 against San Antonio Davenport. In a warm-up game, the Mustangs won 1-0.

“(Against Wimberley) we were hot,” he said. “The boys converted.”
